In the Beginning…..Lake Havasu Marine Association
Nearly 27 years ago, several prominent business leaders in the local Lake Havasu marine industry thought it was time that Lake Havasu City held its own boat show. With vision, energy and prodding from Bill Draper, Jody Gamble, Bob Whelan and several others, a local Lake Havasu Boat Show debuted in 1990. About a dozen years later, buoyed by the success of the annual boat show, Gary Kellogg, CEO of Lake Havasu City’s Partnership for Economic Development, suggested to local marine industry leaders that perhaps the time had come for the growing number of boating businesses in Lake Havasu to organize their own marine trade association. It wasn’t long for that idea to prompt action and a formalized marine association came into being by 2005. Two years later, Jim Salscheider was appointed to head the association and guide it in a direction that would encompass an ambitious and diverse set of goals to promote and maximize recreational boating in Lake Havasu which had now become a significant part of the economic fabric of the City.
Today, the Lake Havasu Marine Association, still lead by Jim Salscheider and an elected Board of Directors, has over 75 member companies including both marine and community based businesses plus several dozen local volunteers. In 2013, the Marine Association received the prestigious Hollister Award from the Western States Boating Administrator Association for its outstanding contributions to boating safety and education. In 2014, the Lake Havasu Marine Association received approved status as a 501-C-3 non-profit corporation. And after 26 years, the Lake Havasu Boat Show is still going strong, now the largest consumer boat show in Arizona and Nevada.
