A bill has been pre-filed in Missouri that would allow residents living on the shores of Lake of the Ozarks the ability to create no-wake zones in coves on the popular body of water.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association, the Watersports Industry Association and the Lake of the Ozarks Marine Trades Association have said they are prepared to oppose the bill (House Bill 1591) if it gains support among legislators.

Rep. David Wood (R-Versailles) pre-filed HB 1591, which would apply to any boat more than 26 feet long or one “designed to create a wake regardless of size,” which some say targets boats with ballast systems, including those used to create larger wakes for activities like wake surfing. At least 50 percent of homeowners would need to support the restriction. According to the NMMA, Rep. Wood has introduced similar bills in previous years and they failed to pass.
